Superhero Safety Week starts Monday 18th November!

Safety Week is upon us, and this year BlueFit Swimming are asking students to come dressed up as their favourite Superhero!

Safety Week is an important initiative that takes place during your regular swimming lessons. Within the lesson there will be a focus on water safety skills such as floating, survival sequences, treading water, survival strokes and basic rescue techniques.

We encourage all students to bring shorts and t-shirts to swim in during their swimming lesson. Infants are encouraged to wear a t-shirt, parents and caregivers are also encouraged to wear a shirt. This creates a real life scenario, if your child is in an accident they will be in clothes. We want to ensure your child is prepared and safe this summer.

Don’t be alarmed by the changes, these skills are simply to offer additional focus on water safety and education in a fun environment. In the end we want to provide the best possible water safety outcomes for your child. Safety week provides us with the opportunity to focus on skills which could ultimately save a child’s life.

We will also be giving out prizes for the best dressed students! We look forward to seeing our little superheros!

What is Safety Week?

Safety Week is an important initiative that takes place during your regular swimming lessons. During Safety Week students will learn various safety skills. We encourage all parents to bring clothes their child can swim in to enhance the quality of learning.

Why is Safety Week Important?

The Royal Life Saving annual drowning report sadly recorded 276 people lost their lives due to drowning in 2019. As one of Australia’s largest swim school providers, we feel BlueFit has the responsibility to our communities to deliver a service that not only emphasises the importance of learning to swim, but also the skills to be safe and aware in and around water.

Safety week provides us with the opportunity to include additional skills into the swimming program which could ultimately save a child’s life.

What do you need to bring?

All preschool and school age children need to bring shorts and t-shirts to swim in during their swimming lesson. All infants and parents or care givers need to both bring a t-shirt to wear during swimming lessons.

This is imperative as we simulate swimming in clothing and what swimming techniques could help save your child’s life.

Did you know that 276 lost their lives to drowning in Australia last year?

As we head into warmer weather let’s work together to keep our children safe. Please make sure you actively supervise your children at the Centre. That means being in the water with them if they are under 5 or weak swimmers. For older children please watch them at all times and avoid distractions such as mobile phones.

Below are prevention strategies of drowning from Royal Life Saving:

  • Active supervision by parents or carers of children
  • Be aware of pre-existing medical conditions
    and physical limitations
  • Understand the possible adverse effects of
    medications
  • Follow safety rules displayed around the pool area
  • Follow directions issued by staff and lifeguards
  • Inform a lifeguard if a non-swimmer, or of any
    relevant medical conditions
  • Learn swimming and water safety skills (find out about our BlueFit Swimming program here)

With the warmer weather on its way, it’s important to remind parents how learning to swim is a life skill as drowning is one of the leading causes of death in children aged 0-4yrs old.

Choosing the right swim school for your child is as important as learning how to swim, not only does it provide great health benefits but it equips children with a skill for life! It increases children’s knowledge and skills for water safety and allows them to enjoy swimming safely.

Did you know our Learn To Swim program offers elite levels known as Shark & Crocodile?

In the Shark level, we focus on developing freestyle and backstroke while building on the swimmers’ breaststroke & butterfly skills. Our students are further introduced to lap swimming and lane etiquette.

Crocodile Level enhances the swimmers’ stroke technique, builds endurance and develops proficiency in all four strokes. Students at this level are doing drills to enhance their skills and develop a stronger technique within their strokes to increase endurance and speed.

Australia has ended on a high note at the FINA Swimming World Championships (Fri, 12 Jul 2019 – Sun, 28 Jul 2019), winning a mixed 4×100-metre medley relay team by 0.02 seconds against the United States. We also had Ariarne Titmus, Madi Wilson, Brianna Throssell and Emma McKeon achieve Australia’s new world record for the 4x200m women’s relay team which now stands at 7:41.50 — beating the previous time set by the Chinese team at the 2009 world championships!

We also had Australian teen Ariarne Titmus, narrowly missed out a gold medal in 200m freestyle final. Titmus, originally from Tasmania, moved to Queensland for better swimming opportunities and look where it has taken her!

Did you know the winning 4×100 mixed medley relay team consisted of the youngest member being 20 years old and the oldest at 27? Proving that you can achieve a lot in competitive swimming from your early teens to your late twenties!

Sometimes people avoid swimming due to the colder weather approaching however there are many reasons why you should keep going!

If you have ever heard that swimming in winter makes you more prone to catching a cold, don’t believe it, it is only an old wives tale! Swimming during the winter time instead helps build a stronger immune system and makes you more resilient to stress and other illnesses.

If you still fear that it may affect your health here are some good habits to maintain:

  • Wearing a swimming cap during the lessons
  • Wearing warm clothing and footwear for after lessons
  • Wearing more coverage with bathers such as a rash vest
  • No other workout is low impact but achieves high results building muscles, burning calories and stimulating your brain. The great thing about swimming is that it’s for everyone! You can also swim in rain, hail or shine, unlike other sports which get called off in bad weather so it keeps your child active throughout the whole year.

Lastly, the best way for you to remember and keep developing skills is through repetition. If you take your children or yourself out for 3-4 months in winter, they may lose their technique and take longer to progress through the level or worse, forget important knowledge when they get back to swimming in public in the early days of spring and summer.

So even though winter is coming around remember to just keep swimming, just keep swimming, swimming, swimming!

Class payments will now be taken on a fortnightly Direct Debit basis. The fortnightly Direct Debit amount of $15.00 per class booking will be debited from either your bank account or credit card account. The first debit is scheduled to take place on Friday 1st February 2019. To see the debit dates, and all other important program dates please view the 2019 Swim School Calendar.

Note: Any payments that were made for Term 1 2019 before the change took place have been added to your account and this credit will be used up before any Direct Debit is processed.

Utilising the Parent Portal, you can enter/update your Direct Debit details through the parent portal by using the login above and going to “Update Payment Details” on the left menu bar.

The portal will also give you access to:

  • Mark yourself absent and book make ups
  • Access swim school resources
  • Update payment details
  • Check class progress*
  • Pay outstanding fees
  • Book additional lessons

Did you know the youngest age a child can start swimming lessons is 4 months old? Our Infants Program begins at 4 months through to 3 years, with a focus on water confidence and safety skills. Through fun and play, we nurture a lifetime of love for the water.

With a parent in the water and the knowledge of our instructors, our Aquatot level will encourage and educate both the child & parent on the basics of water safety. We aim to teach the child a love & respect for the water activities and games!
